An index of my favorite essays, ideas, and open notebook entries found here.

If you’re new here, I’m glad you found your way to me.
This is my open notebook: essays about teaching, reading, family, and grief, written in the spirit of noticing what matters. There’s classroom stuff here, and there’s writing about books, and there’s writing about losing my father and the ongoing work grieving requires. All of it is an attempt to test the idea that ordinary life might pass for art if you look at it long enough.
I write things down because it's how I stay sane, creatively alive, and present in my own life. It makes me a better observer of my students, my kids, the whole blur of it. Occasionally, that turns into something someone else finds useful too.

These pieces collect short pieces of advice that have stuck with me for years. I love wisdom that is simple enough to remember but meaningful enough to guide my real-life decisions.
